Portnoy worked as an ABC News radio journalist before joining CBS News in February 2015. He served as the host of ABC Radio’s coverage of Osama bin Laden’s killing, which won the network an Edward R. Murrow Award for Breaking News. Additionally, he participated in ABC’s Murrow Award-winning coverage of the 2007 Virginia Tech Massacre and the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.

Despite his focus on politics, Portnoy has a wealth of expertise covering natural disasters both domestically and abroad, including Hurricanes Katrina, Ike, Isabel, and Sandy. Following the 2010 Haiti earthquake, he filed from the wreckage; from Joplin, Missouri, following the tragic tornado in 2011; and from Moore, Oklahoma, following the catastrophic storms there in 2013. After the riots in both Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri, he also visited those cities.

Interning for ABC’s “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings”‘ White House Unit, Steven Portnoy got his start in network news. Before joining ABC News Radio in 2006, he spent three years covering local news in Washington at the network’s owned radio station, WMAL-AM.

Portnoy received the Peter Jennings Fellow designation from the National Constitution Centre in 2008. In 2001, he won the radio competition at the Hearst Broadcast News Championships, and in 2005, the John Bayliss Broadcast Foundation presented him with the Bayliss Horizon Award.

When Portnoy was a student at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, he got his start in journalism as a reporter for WSYR-AM in Syracuse. He also produced television newscasts at WSTM-TV and WIXT-TV at that time. WIXT-TV is now WSYR-TV.
