Despite his focus on politics, Portnoy has a wealth of expertise covering natural disasters both domestically and abroad, including Hurricanes Katrina, Ike, Isabel, and Sandy. Following the 2010 Haiti earthquake, he filed from the wreckage; from Joplin, Missouri, following the tragic tornado in 2011; and from Moore, Oklahoma, following the catastrophic storms there in 2013. Portnoy received the Peter Jennings Fellow designation from the National Constitution Centre in 2008. In 2001, he won the radio competition at the Hearst Broadcast News Championships, and in 2005, the John Bayliss Broadcast Foundation presented him with the Bayliss Horizon Award.
