In 1978, Negroni started her career as a journalist. She worked as an on-air broadcast journalist for the stations WMAZ in Macon, Georgia, KSLA Shreveport, Louisiana, New Jersey Nightly News in Newark and Trenton, New Jersey, WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, and WGN in Chicago. Negroni worked in New York for CNN from 1993 until 1999. She has won awards from the Associated Press, the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi, and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Emmy nominee). From 1988 through 1991, Negroni served as a correspondent for CBS in Atlanta, New York, and Chicago. On the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather, her work was featured.

Negroni served as a voting member of a Federal Aviation Administration rulemaking advisory committee on aging aircraft equipment from 2000 to 2005, representing the flying public. President Barack Obama appointed her to the National Transportation Safety Board in 2009. She is a member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators and has given presentations on the overuse of emergency helicopter ambulances in the US, airline flags of convenience as a problem for international security and safety, and assessing the role of human factors in aviation safety.
