She started her career in Houston as a teacher and part-time model. She gave up her job as a teacher to focus solely on being a lead singer. As a lead singer with Houston’s Southeast Inspirational Choir, which was associated with the Church of God in Christ and led by Carl Preacher, Brenda Waters, and Shirley Joiner, Adams initially attracted Thomas Whitfield and Sound of Gospel Records’ notice. On the choir’s single “For My Liberty,” she sang the lead vocals. Adams was on the Give Us Peace record by the Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar Choir with a rendition titled “My Trust Lies in You.” She later entered into a recording agreement with Sound of Gospel, the consequence of which was the 1987 release of her debut album, Just As I Am.

With the release of Mountain High… Valley Low on Elektra Records in 1999, Adams attracted considerable recognition outside of the urban contemporary gospel genre. The album’s creation also included contributions from James “Big Jim” Wright (Mariah Carey, Nicole C. Mullen), Warryn Campbell (Mary Mary, Brandy), and Keith Thomas (Mary Mary, Brandy) (BeBe & CeCe Winans). The record achieved double platinum status in 2000, and Adams was honored with a Grammy. The singles “Yeah,” “Fragile Heart,” and “Open My Heart” are among the album’s prominent ones. Dedicated to Adams’ longtime road manager, who passed tragically in 1998, is “Fragile Heart.”

With The Adams Morning Show, which was aired in more than 26 radio markets in less than two years after the release of What a Wonderful Time, Adams began her radio career.
