Ted began his professional career as a reporter for the Lerner Newspapers. Later, he started writing for Chicago magazine as a freelancer, rose to the position of senior editor, and started focusing on writing about food, wine, and the culinary industry.

Additionally, he rose to fame in 2003 after being hired as a food and wine expert for the Netflix series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. He also served as a judge for Iron Chef America on the Food Network. In 2007, he also served as the host of the six-part documentary Uncorked: Wine Made Simple. Later, he made regular appearances as a judge on the Top Chef show. He received an invitation to work on Food Detectives and Chopped in 2008. The programs at the time had the highest primetime ratings.

He also relocated to the Food Network, where he has been on numerous episodes of shows like Beat Bobby Flay, Best Ever, Cutthroat Kitchen, The Best Thing I Ever Ate, Dear Food Network, and The Next Food Network Star.
