After serving as a reporter for The Times-Picayune for seven years, Nelson started working as a morning anchor for WWL-TV in New Orleans in June 2007. He was appointed co-anchor of ABC’s World News Now and America This Morning on July 7, 2010. In January 2014, Nelson succeeded Phil Lipof as co-anchor of the weekend morning newscasts at WABC-TV in New York City. On February 24, 2020, he declared that he was leaving the station to pursue other chances. Nelson next moved to Chicago, where he helped Nexstar Media Group develop NewsNation for its flagship station, WGN America.

The three-hour-long program, which made its debut in September 2020, was shortened to one hour as a result of the relaunched NewsNation channel adding more opinion and analysis content. In August 2021, Nelson will quit NewsNation.

Nelson consented to reteam with Kate O’Brian, who hired him at ABC, for the October 2021 broadcast and streaming relaunch of Newsy.
