He participated in VORTEX2, the largest and most comprehensive scientific field experiment ever conducted, in 2010 to advance knowledge of tornado production and lengthen tornado warning periods.

During the tornado outbreak on May 24, 2011, Nick followed and transmitted life-saving information from SkyNews9 as he observed an EF5 tornado with a mile-wide swath of damage pass dangerously close to the towns of El Reno and Piedmont, Oklahoma. The sole live footage of the horrific EF3 Oak Grove tornado, which struck on March 6, 2017, was provided by Nick’s reporting from StormTracker9. Fortunately, no lives were lost. He and his colleagues were honored with a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for their coverage of the tornado as it was happening.
