He has been subjected to all of Mother Nature’s fury throughout his career, including mile-wide tornadoes, catastrophic blizzards, inundating floods, paralyzing dust storms, destructive wildfires, and destructive earthquakes. He participated in VORTEX2, the largest and most comprehensive scientific field experiment ever conducted, in 2010 to advance knowledge of tornado production and lengthen tornado warning periods.

During the tornado outbreak on May 24, 2011, Nick followed and transmitted life-saving information from SkyNews9 as he observed an EF5 tornado with a mile-wide swath of damage pass dangerously close to the towns of El Reno and Piedmont, Oklahoma. Tornado outbreaks in Oklahoma during the 2013 severe weather season were unusual. An EF5 tornado decimated Moore, Oklahoma, during this devastating 12-day period, while a record-breaking EF3 tornado with a 2.6-mile width tore through the countryside just a few miles to the west of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.

The sole live footage of the horrific EF3 Oak Grove tornado, which struck on March 6, 2017, was provided by Nick’s reporting from StormTracker9. Fortunately, no lives were lost. He and his colleagues were honored with a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for their coverage of the tornado as it was happening.
