CBS 4-WFOR Background

Miami, Florida-based CBS 4-WFOR is a television station. It broadcasts shows from the CBS network. Together with MyNetworkTV affiliate WBFS-TV, the station is owned and run by the network’s CBS News and Stations division (channel 33). As WCIX-TV, the station debuted on the air on September 20, 1967, on VHF channel 6. The local Coral Television Corporation originally held ownership of the station. In August 1972, General Cinema Company bought a majority stake in Coral Television and WCIX.

After WSUN-TV Channel 6 carried the traditional independent format of kids’ shows, sitcoms, movies, and another local and syndicated programming, WCIX-TV was the first general entertainment independent television station in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area and the second in Florida. In the 1970s, The Lou Gordon Program from Detroit’s WKBD-TV was broadcast on a very small number of stations that were not owned by Kaiser Broadcasting. In order to cater to South Florida’s expanding Hispanic community, it was one of the first stations in the region to offer programming in both English and Spanish. WCIX had extensive cable penetration throughout Florida from the 1970s until the early 1980s, and it was seen on cable systems as far north as Tampa Bay and Orlando.
