She worked for the station as a reporter, anchor, and weatherperson by 1975. Lunden accepted a position at WABC that year. She began hosting Good Morning America in 1980 and remained there for the following 20 years.

At KCRA-TV, Lunden started her career as a journalist. She later moved on to work in New York for WABC-TV’s “Eyewitness News” program in 1975. Lunden also started serving as a co-anchor for the weekend newscasts. She subsequently started working for GMA as a feature news reporter before filling in as a co-host for ABC’s Winter Olympics coverage. Her journalistic career included several years of presenting alongside Charlie Gibson of ABC. She was able to interview several US Presidents and First Ladies because of her popularity on the GMA show, including, to name a few, Gerald and Betty Ford, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Jimmy, and Rosalynn Carter, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and George and Barbara Bush.

Lunden hosted the ‘Behind Closed Doors program on the A&E cable network. She has frequently served as a guest host on the network’s program “Biography.” ‘Hometown Heroes’ and ‘America’s Invisible Children’ were two more DirectTV programs she hosted.
