Islam won the Wincott Foundation’s prize for “Best Television Coverage of a Topical Issue” in May 2009, in part because of his reporting on the escalating financial woes of Icelandic banks. “Here was something genuinely different, fully convincing, with a superb interview and free of many of the visual clichés which marked too many financial programs,” the judges said of the piece. He received the BJOYA award for Best Broadcast Story and Business Journalist of the Year in 2009 for his investigation into the Icelandic banks.

The judges that selected Islam as the 2009 WorkWorld Foundation’s Broadcast News Reporter of the Year noted that “his exceptional writing transforms abstract economics into something accessible to all, informing viewers in a captivating and innovative way.”

Islam was put in for the British Muslim Awards’ Services to Media category in January 2015. For his interview with Prime Minister David Cameron, he earned the Royal Television Society award for the Interview of the Year in March 2017. He received the Asian Achiever’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Media, Arts, and Culture in September 2019.
