Connecticut NBC Every weekend morning on NBC Connecticut, meteorologist Darren Sweeney gives Connecticut’s most precise prediction. He also takes pleasure in reporting live on severe weather during the week from both the studio and the pitch. Darren joined the First Alert prediction team in October 2008 and has received recognition from both the National Weather Association (NWA) and the American Meteorological Society (AMS) with their seals of approval.

Born and bred in West Hartford, Connecticut, Darren is proud to be a forecaster for the television station he grew up passing by and practically daily watching. Darren’s interest in weather was sparked at a young age by the harsh weather in New England. When everyone was going inside to seek shelter, Darren would grab a video camera and head outside, letting his family know that he was fascinated by storms.

Darren has prior experience making weather predictions for New England. Darren received two Associated Press honors while working as a meteorologist for a Springfield TV station for his coverage of severe flooding in October 2005 and for Best Weathercast in 2006. Additionally, he provided live coverage of other weather-related emergencies, most recently the significant flooding that occurred along the Merrimack River in May 2006. More recently, the Connecticut Society for Professional Journalists recognized him with a “Breaking News” award for his coverage of the 2009 EF-1 Wethersfield tornado.

Before moving back to New England, Darren worked for WFTX-TV in Fort Myers, Florida, forecasting severe weather and chasing hurricanes. On a few occasions, he was sent to New Orleans to assist sister stations in covering Tropical Storm “Isidore” and Hurricane “Lilly” in 2002.

Darren has covered some of the worst storms in his career while working at NBC Connecticut. He was a member of the team that provided forecasts for Hurricane Irene, Superstorm Sandy, and numerous tornado touchdowns.

Darren spends his free time visiting the stunning New England countryside on one of his well-known road excursions, especially in the summer. Darren is also pleased to teach in the Department of Journalism at his alma university, CCSU, as an Associate Professor with tenure. He enjoys working with students who want to pursue careers in the fascinating fields of broadcast journalism and journalism. On numerous occasions, Darren donates his time in an effort to raise money and awareness for various forms of cancer research.
