After WBAL-TV (channel 11) and WMAR-TV (channel 2), the station debuted as WAAM on November 1, 1948, becoming Baltimore’s third television station in just over a year. Radio-Television of Baltimore Inc., led by Baltimore merchants and brothers Ben and Herman Cohen, first controlled CBS13-WJZ-TV. Channel 13 held a secondary affiliation with the DuMont Television Network up to its shutdown in 1956. It was the fifth East Coast-based ABC station. Both affiliations departed from WMAR-TV, which changed its affiliation to CBS exclusively.

Since 1967, CBS13-WJZ-TV has utilized its current stylized “13” logo, created with a Group W-only font face. In 2002, the CBS eye was added, and in 2018, the station updated to a silver and gold-colored version with the squares representing the WJZ call letters below. On November 3, 2008, CBS began using the stations’ call signs for radio. In order to reflect their affiliation with WJZ-TV, CBS Radio changed the call letters of two of its Baltimore stations, WHFS (105.7 FM) and WJFK (1300 AM), to WJZ-FM and WJZ. These changes took place at the same time that local sports radio programming from WJFK—which included a show co-hosted by WJZ-TV sports anchor Mark Viviano—moved to WJZ-FM.
