In the middle of the 1970s, Mitchell played accordion in wedding bands on Long Island, New York; he later worked as a radio newswriter for WHLI-AM. He briefly worked for NBC Radio News and Information Service in Rockefeller Center in the late 1970s before beginning to make a living as a stand-up comic.
