Tom Overlie KTTC

Tom Overlie, an Emmy-winning journalist who has lived in Rochester for more than 20 years, is from there. He was raised in southern North Dakota and Nigeria, both in Western Africa, after being born in Minneapolis. When he was younger, Tom dreamed of becoming an explorer who would journey to isolated islands and far-off jungles in pursuit of hidden wealth. In addition, he aspired to work as a news reporter like North Dakotan television journalist Al Gustin.

He was fortunate to have met Al when he was a high school sophomore because that helped him shape his career path in television news (had he met Indiana Jones from Raiders of the Lost Ark…) Tom’s parents, who worked as journalists for a local newspaper and a magazine for more than 30 years, are his main role models. Even now, the smell of printing ink brings back memories of his childhood working with his parents at the newspaper where he first developed his storytelling and journalism skills. For more than 30 years, Tom has anchored the evening news. Since May 2000, he has served as the primary co-anchor for KTTC’s 6 and 10 o’clock newscasts. He has also reported for KEYC-TV in Mankato, Minnesota, and KMOT-TV in Minot, North Dakota.

Tom enjoys being active. When he’s not working at KTTC, he spends his free time flipping houses, boating, exploring exotic locations, and giving back to numerous community organizations. In addition to awards from the Minnesota Broadcaster’s Association, Minnesota Associated Press, Northwest Broadcast News-Eric Sevareid Award, and the North Dakota Broadcasters Association, he has won eight Emmy Awards for outstanding newscast (Upper Midwest Chapter). News reports throughout the years have carried him from his “backyard” to far-flung towns deep into Mexico.

Tom chose to work as a journalist because he enjoys learning new things and sharing them with KTTC viewers. One-on-one interviews with sitting presidents, parachuting from an aircraft while broadcasting live, and holding the longest-running, locally produced telethon in the country that raised millions for cancer research are a few of his greatest recollections. Tom will be traversing the world to isolated islands in search of lost treasures after his journalism career is over one day. Indians Jones, too.
