Award-winning American journalist Steve Osunsami has been a correspondent for ABC News since 1997, operating out of the network’s Southern Bureau in Atlanta. Before joining ABC News as a journalist in 1997, Osunsami began his career with WREX-TV in Rockford, Illinois, WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and KOMO-TV in Seattle.
His work has carried him across the nation, from reporting riots in Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri, to the Florida recount of the 2000 United States presidential election, and the 2015 Charleston church shooting that resulted in the murder of nine black parishioners.
Osunsami became the focus of political discussion as he was one of several African American reporters who showed emotion live on air the night that Barack Obama was elected as the country’s first black president.

Speaking about his personal involvement with the project, Osunsami said, “It amazes me that as a Black American with a college degree and a high school diploma, the specifics of the Tulsa massacre have eluded me up until recently, and I think that’s a tragedy. It speaks a lot about how racist and offensive history is recorded in America. We prefer to treat it in silence. Additionally, ignoring the hurt will not make it go away, similar to ignoring a fight with a member of your family.
The book “My America: What My Country Means to Me, by 150 Americans from All Walks of Life,” edited by Hugh Downs, included an essay by Osunsami.
