From 1994 to 2001, he served as Chairman of the National Coalition Party (NCP), Minister of Justice from 1995 to 1996, Minister of Finance from 1996 to 2003, Deputy Prime Minister from 1995 to 2001, and NCP presidential contender in 2006. From 2007 to 2011, he was the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament, and since 2002, he has been the honorary president of the European People’s Party (EPP). Sauli Niinisto Political Career

Between 1978 and 1988, Sauli Niinisto had his own law business in Salo before joining national politics, serving on the municipal council of Salo from 1977 to 1992 and being elected to the Finnish Parliament from the constituency of Finland Proper in 1987.

In 1994, he was elected party chairman of the NCP, and in 1995, he was appointed Justice Minister in Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen’s first administration. In 1996, he was appointed Finance Minister, and under social democrat Lipponen, he served as Deputy Prime Minister. He was also the first Finn to buy something with euros on January 1, 2002, however, he announced his eventual retirement from politics in 2001, and Ville Itala took over as party leader that year.

In March 2005, he launched his candidacy for the 2006 presidential election as vice-chairman of the European Investment Bank’s board of directors. He qualified for the second-round runoff on January 29, 2006, but lost to Halonen. He declared in 2006 that he would run again in the 2007 parliamentary election, receiving 60,563 votes, a record for a Finnish parliamentary election; it was around 21% higher than Hertta Kuusinen’s 1948 record.

He was elected as the president of the Football Association of Finland on November 8, 2009, after negotiating the merging of the European Democrat Union (EDU) into the EPP in 2002.

Sauli was also the NCP candidate in the 2012 presidential election, winning the first round and going on to face Green League candidate Haavisto in the pivotal second round with 37.0 percent of the vote. He won the second round with 62.6 percent of the vote over Haavisto’s 37.4 percent. Niinisto’s victory margin was higher than any other president who had been elected directly.

In May 2017, he announced that he will run for re-election in the 2018 presidential election, and he garnered 62.7 percent of the vote, making him Finland’s first president elected in the first round of the popular vote. “The masks have now been removed, presenting simply the face of war,” Niinisto said when asked about his thoughts on Putin following Russia’s attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

He welcomed US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to Helsinki for the US-Russia summit on July 16, 2018. On September 25, 2018, he attended the 73rd United Nations General Assembly in New York. On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian Armed Forces to invade Ukraine.

Niinisto paid a one-day visit to Washington, DC, to meet President Joe Biden and other US lawmakers and security officers on March 4, 2022. They agreed to strengthen bilateral and bilateral security cooperation between Finland and the United States.

President Sauli and Prime Minister Sanna Marin issued a joint statement on May 12, 2022, 10 weeks after the invasion began, calling for ‘NATO membership without delay.’Sauli also appears in the political comedy TV series “The Autocrats” as an animated figure.
