The Age newspaper hired Grattan in 1970, and he joined the Canberra Press Gallery in 1971. She was hired in 1976 as The Age’s Chief Political Correspondent, a job she would retain until 1993. Grattan left The Age in 1993 and was named editor of The Canberra Times, becoming her the country’s first female urban daily newspaper editor. She was fired from this job after serving for two years and went back to The Age, where she was later promoted to political editor.
Grattan began his career as a senior writer for The Australian Financial Review in 1996. Three years later, he was named The Sydney Morning Herald’s Chief Political Correspondent. She joined The Age once more in 2002 as a columnist, and in 2004 she was promoted to Political Editor and Bureau Chief.
She made the announcement of her departure from The Age on February 4 in order to accept a professorial fellowship at the University of Canberra and take on the role of Chief Political Correspondent at The Conversation.
