He helped create a morning show at KVIQ-TV in Eureka, where his broadcasting career in news began. KSBW-TV in Salinas, in the heart of Steinbeck Country, was his next stop. Tamayo returned to the Bay Area and worked for KRON-TV, where he produced environmental stories and participated in the morning newscasts.

In 2008, Tamayo started working for KTVU FOX2, where he won two Emmys for best weather reporting. For his contribution to the coverage of the Napa earthquake, he received another Emmy award. He keeps on learning more about weather phenomena in his free time. Tamayo has written about a variety of environmental issues, including the latest NASA equipment to track shifting snow conditions in the Sierra and research on fire science.

He is passionate about weather education is being taught in Bay Area schools. For our local pupils, Tamayo has acquired presentations that make science interesting and engaging. He was one of the project managers who worked with Oakland Athletics to plan the inaugural Weather Education Day in 2019. At the Oakland Coliseum, more than 2000 students were there.
