Linda Yu is a Chinese-American novelist and former newscaster who was born on December 1, 1946. Yu gained notoriety as a co-anchor of WLS-TV’s Eyewitness newscast in Chicago, Illinois, which aired from April 1984 to November 2016. When Yu started working as a broadcast journalist for WMAQ-TV in Chicago in 1979, she became the city’s first Asian American journalist. Yu has won five local Emmy Awards for her broadcasting efforts, one of which was for her 2001 coverage of the fallout from 9/11. Yu received a National Gold Medal for her documentary “The Scars of Belfast” in 1984 from the National Conference of Community and Justice.

In 1970, Yu began her career in broadcasting as a writer and producer for KTLA-TV in Los Angeles. She later worked as a writer for ABC O & O KABC-TV in the same city. After relocating to Portland, Oregon, in early 1975, she worked for KATU-TV for a short period as a reporter.

Afterward, she relocated to California once more, when she was hired by KGO-TV in San Francisco as a general assignment reporter and backup anchor. She remained there until 1979. Yu completed a report while there that aided in the adoption of state legislation shielding locals from drivers without insurance.

She began working as a general assignment reporter and weekend co-anchor at NBC’s WMAQ-TV in June 1979. She started assisting Ron Magers as a co-anchor on the 4:30 and 10 PM newscasts in February 1980.

Yu’s first Emmy was awarded in May 1981 for a special program about President Ronald Reagan’s attempted assassination on March 30, 1981. In 1982, she won her second Emmy for covering and reporting on a construction disaster in Chicago’s central Loop. Linda left WMAQ-TV in March 1984, claiming management disruptions.

Linda Yu Retirement

Yu made her retirement from WLS-TV and TV news known on September 6, 2016, following 46 years in the news and 37 years in the Chicago market. Her final broadcast took place at 4 PM on November 23. Earlier in the day, ABC 7’s Windy City Live included an homage to Yu, with reviews and celebrations of her career as well as her contributions to the city from friends, family, and coworkers.

Yu signed a book deal with a leading Chinese publisher to write her second book featuring unique stories of prominent Asian woman entrepreneurs, and political and cultural icons in the United States.
