He began working for the BBC in 1985 as a staff reporter for BBC Radio Leicester. In 1988, he switched to being a TV host for Midlands Today. In January 1989, he returned to Radio Leicester in the role of News Editor. He relocated to Manchester in 1991 to work for Radio Five, a newly established station, where he aired the nightly magazine show Five Aside. Additionally, he started working for Five Live in 1994 as a newsreader and reporter before quickly transitioning into a Weekend Breakfast presenter and eventually co-hosting Five Live Breakfast alongside Victoria Derbyshire. From July 2003 to July 2004, he moved to the mid-morning program before leaving to work as a replacement presenter for BBC News.
