Hersch was first drawn to broadcasting by seeing Michele Tafoya on Monday Night Football, among other things. In high school, Hersch began reporting on sporting events. Hersch visited Kuwait while working for Fox Sports North to interview many former NHL players who introduced hockey to American service members stationed there.

Additionally, they ran hockey skills clinics and played floor hockey games on the base while spending several days residing at Camp Buehring with the soldiers.
