National Football League (NFL)

The American Professional Football Association (APFA) formed the National Football League (NFL) in 1920. Ten clubs from four states that had previously participated in regional leagues in their respective regions made up the initial roster. After several decades of unsuccessful attempts, the NFL became the first professional football league to successfully establish a presence on a national level. The Decatur Staleys, who are now the Chicago Bears, and the Chicago Cardinals, who are now the Arizona Cardinals, are the only two founder teams who are still active in the league. The Green Bay Acme Packers, which were founded in 1919, are now the oldest League franchise still operating in the same city. In 1922, NFL adopted its present name.

The NFL embraced progressively more formal organization during the 1920s and 1930s, and the first official championship game was played in 1933. As a result, membership in the League gradually stabilized during this time. The League ceased acquiring black players in 1927, but after World War II, integration resumed. Notably, following the war, there were numerous additional alterations. In Major League Baseball, the position of league president changed into the more powerful one of the commissioner.

Additionally, FNL teams grew more financially stable, with the last team folding in 1952 and the league incorporating teams from the All-America Football Conference, which enjoyed a brief period of greater success, in 1950. Only the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers are still in existence today. The NFL was on its way to becoming one of the most well-liked sports leagues in the United States when the NFL championship game of that season was dubbed “the most exciting game ever played” by 1958.
