Brian Wilkes FOX59-Indianapolis

Since July 1995, Brian Wilkes has served as the station’s chief meteorologist. He finished a 2.5-year internship with meteorologist Tom Skilling at WGN-9 (Chicago).

At the beginning of the fourth grade, Brian became fascinated by the weather. He missed two weeks of school in 1979 due to the blizzard, growing up on Chicago’s far south side. This inspired his interest in the weather, which he still has today. Both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association recognize Brian as a member. He obtained his Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association in August of 1996.

At his first station, WSJV-TV, currently the Fox Affiliate in Elkhart, Indiana, for their 6 and 10 p.m. broadcasts, Brian started his career as the chief meteorologist. Brian created, scripted, and narrated a documentary about the Palm Sunday tornadoes that ravaged South Bend in April 1965 when he was working at WSJV.

He has received a lot of awards during his stay in Indianapolis. For his severe weather show “Blown Away,” which he hosted and co-produced, Brian received an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1996. The “Ahead of the Storm” show, which earned an Emmy in 2001, was one of two other severe weather specials he hosted.

However, not everything is always serious. When he hosted and performed with his own orchestra for the “Singin’, Swingin’ Holiday Special” in 2001, which featured a number of musical performers from Central Indiana, Brian displayed his fun side. Brian enjoys educating as well as making weather predictions. Brian spends the entire year visiting schools in central Indiana when he is not in front of the camera. He is also quite involved in his neighborhood, frequently volunteering his time and skills to several philanthropic organizations.
