Additionally, he started designing the outdoor weather set that he had brought with him from his previous position at Minneapolis, Minnesota’s KARE-TV 11, an NBC affiliate. When Bernier was 4 years old, he first became interested in the weather when he noticed the black clouds of an impending storm. That marked the beginning of a lifelong fascination with the weather of all kinds. But while growing up in New England, he developed a particular fondness for winter snowstorms and the well-known “nor’easter.”

By beginning his broadcasting career at the age of 16 by providing weekend weather forecasts for his hometown radio station, WBSM-AM, Bernier established himself as a mainstay in New Bedford radio. His broadcasting abilities were honed with the assistance of a number of mentors, including Stann Lipp of WBSM, Dick Stevens, Jim Loomis, and newscaster Jim Phillips (still on WBSM), as well as by shadowing the late Charlie Taylor, meteorologist for WLNE-TV, whose studios were still located in New Bedford in the 1970s.

Bernier completed his high school studies at New Bedford High School. He continued his education at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont, where he graduated with a bachelor of science in meteorology in 1981. While still in college, Bernier started a student-run business called “The New England Weather Net,” which offered daily weather feeds by phone to regional radio stations, including WSTJ-AM in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.
