Stephanie Lum Hawaii News Now-KGMB

Who would have thought that a person’s middle name would have such a significant impact on their life? My mother told me that the Chinese word “Choy Lin” meant to continue or to persevere.

My parents quickly came to the conclusion that their daughter really did “go on and on” by talking a lot and asking a lot of questions. I used to question Popo for advice on how to live a long life, how my aunts made jai or pork tofu, and what kind of lures my uncles used when they went fishing.

I recall creating short newsletters to share what I learned at the subsequent Lum or Wong event. I decided that I wanted to share important stories that would have a positive impact wherever I went after seeing the smile on everyone’s faces and the joy they felt having their stories recounted.

I spent a lot of my time at Seattle University hauling around a video camera and tripod, interviewing people, and staying up late in the editing lab. I gained experience in the actual world of journalism in Guam, where I reported on my first significant story, after four years of journalism education and newspaper internships in Washington State and Hawaii.

My first professional journalism award for “Best Spot News” was given to me for the exclusive investigative report that revealed health risks at a well-known restaurant. I developed my jack-of-all-trades skills working in such a small market, learning to write under pressure, edit, produce, report, and anchor the news. It required a lot of work, but it gave me the invaluable experience I needed to advance as a journalist. Also, check, Sue Serio

I spent two years in Guam before returning home to work at KGMB 9 News, where I then transferred to KHNL and K-FIVE in 2001. I received three additional awards for “Best General News Story,” “Best Series Reporting,” and “Best Feature Story” for my work in Hawaii. In addition to this year’s four renowned Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), Hawaii News Now was honored with a distinguished Emmy award in 2008 for “Overall News Excellence” for its news coverage.

I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to report on several significant events throughout the years, including the tsunami of February 27th, President Barack Obama’s visit to Hawaii, and the earthquake in October 2006.
