As a slam poet, Sohn’s career started out. Director Marc Levin saw her performing her poetry in a theater and hired her for his 1998 film Slam. She not only acted in the movie, but she also co-wrote it. She next appeared as Kanita in Martin Scorsese’s drama movie “Bringing Out the Dead,” alongside Patricia Arquette, Nicolas Cage, and John Goodman. In the new millennium, the actress made an appearance in the movie “Shaft.” On “The Wire,” Sohn was chosen to play Detective Shakima “Kima” Greggs. The HBO crime drama ran for 56 episodes before making its premiere. She made an appearance in the drama movie “G,” about a recording magnate attempting to reconcile with his ex-lover.
In the seasons 2006 and 2007, “Cold Case,” a police procedural series, featured Sohn in a recurrent role. In 2008, she made an appearance in the dance movie “Step Up 2: The Streets.” She made her acting debut in the sitcom “Brothers & Sisters” the same year as Trish Evans. She was cast as Samantha Baker in “Body of Proof,” an ABC medical drama series that aired from 2011 to 2012, and as Sonya Rucker in “The Good Wife” in 2010. In 2012, she appeared in “Burn Notice” as Agent Olivia Riley.
From 2014 to 2015, Sohn played Lenore/Esther in the television series “The Originals.” She also played the role of Franny in the movie “The Missing Girl” around this time, which is about a comic book store owner who hires a graphic novelist who is seeking to break into the industry. In 2016, she had appearances in the dramas “Shut Eye” and “Luke Cage.” A year later, Sohn directed the documentary Baltimore Rising.
