Shewfelt pursued his Olympic dreams with other students who were also athletes at the National Sport School in Calgary where he attended high school. He had coaching from Kelly Manjack at Altadore Gymnastic Club from the age of 6 till the 2004 Olympics. After the Olympics, coach Manjak relocated to Ontario after getting married and leaving Shewfelt in Calgary to train with coach Tony Smith at the University of Calgary.
