Prior to his current position, Johns worked as a justice correspondent for the New York Times, where he covered the Supreme Court, as well as legal and criminal matters. With his legal experience, Johns contributed to the network’s breaking news coverage of the Affordable Care Act as well as the issue surrounding the National Security Agency’s electronic monitoring and surveillance. He is stationed in the Washington, D.C. bureau of the network.

Johns, who is well-known for his crime and law enforcement reporting, previously worked as a senior correspondent for the network, covering current news and political events across the board. He reported at political events throughout the campaign season for the network’s America’s Choice 2012 election coverage. He also played a key role in the network’s Emmy-winning election coverage. In January 2004, Johns joined CNN as a legislative correspondent.

Johns worked as a reporter at WSOC-TV in Charlotte, North Carolina, before joining WRC-TV. In 1980, he began his television career as a reporter and anchor at WSAZ-TV in Huntington, West Virginia.
