Jane Pauley NBC

Jane Pauley ImageOn March 31, 1992, NBC launched Dateline, its 18th news magazine project. Pauley and Stone Phillips co-tied down Dateline from 1992 until 2003. On February 9, 1993, the Dateline made headlines when, as part of the settlement of a claim regarding the failure to disclose the use of a combustible device in an anecdote about the wellbeing of a General Motors pickup truck that aired on Dateline on November 17, 1992, Pauley and Phillips delivered an open expression of regret to General Motors for the benefit of NBC.

The president of NBC News was fired, along with Dateline’s producer and others involved with the GM story, after an internal investigation revealed that neither Pauley nor Phillips had any connection to the section. Dateline persisted, continued to grow, and at one point, was providing real-time reporting five evenings per week.

Along with her Dateline responsibilities, Pauley was also committed to Time and Again, a half-hour program that aired on the then-new MSNBC and linked real news stories with footage from the NBC News archives.

Pauley shocked NBC in 2003 by choosing not to renegotiate her expiring contract. Pauley explained her decision at the time, stating, “I think girls think about cycles, natural and individual. Another cycle began this year, and my agreement was carried out. It appeared to be an opportunity to wrap up a study of real life. As I continue to browse bookstores, I see titles that address second acts in regular life.

Jane Pauley The Jane Pauley Show

The concept for a daytime television show was born as a result of Pauley’s decision to leave Dateline. Unexpectedly. Pauley returned to television in 2004 as the host of the NBC Universal-distributed syndicated daytime program The Jane Pauley Show. Even though The Jane Pauley Show never gained traction with critics and was canceled after one season, Pauley regarded it as the most difficult and proudest year of her professional career. In my perspective, trying something you’ve previously failed at shows that you have the guts to try.

In addition, Pauley launched her syndicated program that year and published her bestselling diary, Skywriting: A Life Out of the Blue, in which she disclosed her diagnosis of bipolar disorder. According to a citation, Pauley called her decision to speak honestly about the issue “the least demanding choice I have ever made.”

Jane Pauley CBS News

Pauley has also appeared as a guest on CBS This Morning and filled in for Scott Pelley on the CBS Evening News.

On September 25, 2016, it was announced that Pauley would succeed Charles Osgood as host of CBS Sunday Morning after his retirement. The official creator of the program, Rand Morrison, stated in a statement, “We first got to know Jane when we did an anecdote about her on Sunday Morning.

“Our observers responded fast and that she be given a permanent spot on Sunday Morning. Additionally, as is so often the case, they were right. She is a dedicated and knowledgeable communication columnist. In any case, she’s a pleasure to deal with, which is equally important. A worthy successor who is a perfect match. On October 9, 2016, exactly 40 years after her Today presentation, Pauley began her work as a host.
