Gwen Tolbart is a journalist on American television who has won Emmy Awards. She currently works as a meteorologist for FOX 5. She reports on stories on the evening shows on Wednesdays and Thursdays and provides weather forecasts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Tolbart, a native Canadian of the third generation, enjoys the snow but despises the cold.

Tolbart began her broadcasting career in her Canadian hometown of Montreal, Quebec. She graduated from Dawson College with a degree in social science and Concordia University in Montreal with a BA in journalism. She first worked in community television as the host and producer of the news magazine program “Black Is” for the Black Community Communications Media, and she also made contributions to the radio show “Black Speaks.” Later, she moved to Canada’s nationally broadcast “Weather Network,” where she worked as a weather and news anchor. She also worked as a reporter and weather anchor for the consumer protection program “Fighting Back” at CTV’s Montreal CFCF-12, where she also hosted the internationally syndicated, award-winning travel program “Travel, Travel.”

Tolbart relocated to KTVT CBS-11 in Dallas, Texas, in 1997 to take up employment there as a weather reporter, host of the station’s live audience conversation show, “Positively Texas,” and feature anchor. She was honored with a 2000 Media Person of the Year award, a weather team Emmy, five National Association of Black Journalists Broadcasting Awards, and other honors. As a weather reporter and anchor, Tolbart joined WTTG FOX 5 DC in the Nation’s Capital in 2002. Since then, she has received three Associated Press awards and five Emmy nominations. She has always taken an active role in community service in both the USA and Canada, with a strong commitment to women’s causes, an interest in youngsters, and support for positive direction.

One of her initiatives in Montreal was “Positive Images,” a mentoring program she founded for young inner-city females. She had arranged for Coretta Scott King to be one of the highlights for the girls.

Tolbart tutored elementary school students while working at CBS in Dallas and helped build up mentor programs and workshops for at-risk females and single teen mothers. She received the esteemed “National Community Service Award” (NABJ) from the National Association of Black Journalists, made an appearance in Jet Magazine, and in 2002 was named a “Woman of Distinction” with official recognition from the Governor of Texas, a Texas State Representative, and the US Congress.

For her professional accomplishments and volunteer work, Tolbart was formally recognized on the floor by the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, Government of Canada, in 2002. She was on the Board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Washington, DC. Gwen also served on the board of “Our House,” an Olney, Maryland, residential facility for at-risk adolescent males, for 14 years. She organized events there and generated a significant amount of money for a new dorm.

Tolbart received several awards while living in Washington, DC, including the “2004 Voices Against Violence Award” from The Empower Program (helping teen girls), the “2009 New Endeavors By Women Volunteer Award” (helping homeless women), the “2005 Woman Of The Year” (non-member) award from D.C.’s Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., being named one of the “2014 Top 100 Women In the State of Maryland” by The Daily Record,

She was chosen as a “Leader and Honorary Member” of the All-Canada University Association, Washington DC Metro Area, with the intention of promoting education. In a similar vein, Tolbart was genuinely pleased and thrilled to receive President Obama’s “Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Service” in 2016.

Tolbart also has her own professional speaking company called “Tolbart Talks” as an entrepreneur. She furthermore works as a keynote and motivational speaker, seminar facilitator, emcee, and speaking coach. She also belongs to the National Speakers Association (NSA) and has served on the board of the D.C. chapter of the NSA in the past.
